Strategic Communications Counselor

Rich has more than 40 years of communications experience including military public affairs, and both corporate and agency work. One of the top strategic thinkers in issues management and consumer marketing, he has significant experience in brand positioning and reputation management. He is known for his ability to develop and lead successful integrated communications programs across disciplines and geographies.

For the past three years he has  been a senior counselor to the global public relations firm, Porter Novelli. During seven years as executive vice president and senior partner at Fleishman-Hillard, one of the world’s largest public relations firms, he was chief marketing officer, served clients and participated in the business development function.

While at GolinHarris (now Golin), another global firm, for more than 26 years, Rich played an integral role in the firm’s growth from a local Chicago agency to an international leader through client development, new business, and acquisition. He was CEO for 12 years and served as chairman.

His consultancy, The Jernstedt Company, specializes in strategic and creative communications counsel, communications planning, and message development.

Client engagements throughout his career include non-profit organizations; industry and professional associations; and corporations such as McDonald’s, Chrysler, Levi’s, Campbell Soup, BMW, and University of Oregon.

Rich has been a board member of the Institute for Public Relations and The Arthur W. Page Society. He is a founding member of the board and former chairman of the Council of Public Relations Firms. He is a member of the American Brands Council.  He served with Chicago area senior executives on the Business Leadership Group of workforceChicago and is now a member of Business Champions.  He is a long-term member of the board of Off The Street Club and has served on the board of the Lincoln Park Zoo.

A native Oregonian, Rich is a graduate of the Journalism  School at the University of Oregon. He served on the University’s Board of Trustees for eight years.
